2021 Council Meeting of the BFPA Held Successfully via Video Conference

On October 22, the 2021 Council Meeting of the Beijing Forum for Performing Arts (BFPA) was held by video conference at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). Seven council members attended the meeting. They are WANG Ning (President of the NCPA), Maria Victoria Alcaraz (General Director of Teatro Colón), George Vierthaler(General Director of Stiftung Oper), Alex Beard (Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House), Rory Jeffes (CEO of Opera Australia), Umberto Fanni (Director-General of Royal Opera House Muscat), and Ignacio García-Belenguer Laita (Director General and CEO of the Teatro Real). ZHU Jing, Secretary General of the BFPA, presided over the meeting. Members reviewed the work of the BFPA since its establishment in 2020, discussed the future work plan for 2022, and voted on membership application.



The Secretariat presented the specially-produced short video, “365 Days of the BFPA”, and together with the members, reviewed the achievements over the past year and presented for the first time the working routine of the Secretariat. The members gave full recognition to the achievements of the BFPA in such a challenging situation since the outbreak of the Covid-19 and the excellent work of the Secretariat. The members had a full discussion on the work plan for 2022,conducted in-depth exchanges, and reached consensus on the sustainable development of arts institutions, the cultivation of new audiences in the post-epidemic era, the digitalization of the performing arts industry, and the innovation of arts and technology.

We unanimously agree that promoting the sustainable development of theatres is a common goal of the BFPA members, for which we shall explore scientific paths and methods;
We unanimously agree that the COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the performing arts industry and that it is imperative we share our experience in fighting the pandemic;
We unanimously agree that “art + technology” would offer vast room of development for the industry in the future and we should make good use of the BFPA platform to promote the integration between technology and art;
We unanimously agree that we need to introduce more eco-responsible choices into our performance forms and management models in the meantime of resuming in-person performances;
We unanimously agree that we should make use of the communication platform of the BFPA, give full play to the routine communication mechanism of the BFPA Council, and jointly promote the development of the BFPA.



Finally, the BFPA Council deliberated and approved the application of the Centro Cultural Kirchner (CCK) in Argentina to join the BFPA, which becomes the BFPA’s 26th member. Located in Buenos Aires, Argentina, CCK is affiliated with the Argentine Ministry of Culture and officially opened in 2015. The Argentine National Symphony Orchestra is CCK’s permanent resident orchestra. It was established in 1948 and has toured in Spain, Brazil, the United States, Japan, and other countries. In the future, CCK will work with the member institutions to explore cooperation opportunities in different fields and make positive contributions to the promotion of international cooperation among performing arts institutions in Latin America.
