The Teatro Real was nominated for the second year in a row and this year won the award considered the most important of those that are given in the world of lyrics.

This year the Teatro Real also obtained three other nominations in the categories of Best Orchestra with the Orquesta Titular del Teatro Real (Resident Orchestra of the Teatro Real) and Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid (Madrid Symphony Orchestra); Best World Premiere with the opera Je suis narcisiste by composer Raquel García Tomás, and Best Audio-visual Production for the DVD Street Scene

Spanish tenor Xabier Anduaga has won the award for Best Young Singer, shared with Russian mezzo-soprano Vasilisa Berzhanskaya.

Both Carlos Alvarez, finalist in the Best Male Voice category, and Xabier Anduaga are among those who feature in the opera Viva la mamma by Gaetano Donizetti which will premiere at the Teatro Real on June 2.

The Teatro Real has received the International Opera Award 2021 for Best Opera House, which recognizes the quality of its artistic programming throughout 2019 and represents the homage of the whole sector to a trajectory that has strengthened its international projection, making it one of the model theatres in the world. In this sense, the organization has made a special mention to the Teatro Real for the efforts it made during the pandemic: on July 1 it became the first theatre in the world to reopen its doors and over the following months it was the only one with uninterrupted stage activity, which made it a symbol of strength, creativity and effort within the international scene.

On behalf of the institution, the artistic director of the Teatro Real, Joan Matabosch, thanked the award and praised the organization of the International Opera Awards for their efforts to carry out this gala despite the current complicated circumstances and for the support it entails for all and the encouragement to restore a sense of normalcy as soon as possible. His words have had an emotional recognition for the entire team of the Teatro Real, both for governing bodies and for each and every worker who “manages to raise the curtain every day with determination, professionalism and enthusiasm”.
