Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra
Led by resident conductor and director of orchestral studies Ken Lam, the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra (TJO) presents eight concerts of exceptional variety and depth this season, including Mozart’s Symphony No. 35, “Haffner”; Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1; Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, “Titan”; Debussy’s La mer; Strauss’ Don Juan; and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring as well as modern repertoire by Varèse, Chou Wen-Chung, and Zhou Tian.
Wing-sie Yip, music director emeritus of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, will lead the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra for the first time as guest conductor in Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. Two graduate school concerto competition winners will also join the orchestra to present concertos of their choice. Beginning this season, Tianjin Juilliard will present insightful pre-concert talks hosted by Ken Lam before each TJO performance.
In November, the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra embarks on its inaugural tour to Beijing and Hong Kong, with debut appearances at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing and the HKGNA Music Festival in Hong Kong. Two resident faculty members, violinist Angelo Xiang Yu and violist Hanna Lee, will present Ravel’s Tzigane and Bruch’s Romance, respectively, in collaboration with the orchestra.
Tianjin Juilliard Ensemble
The Tianjin Juilliard Ensemble (TJE) is a world-class, mixed-instrument ensemble showcasing the stellar Tianjin Juilliard faculty. As the school's resident ensemble, it will celebrate Tianjin Juilliard's fifth anniversary with imaginative programming that pays tribute to the ensemble’s artistic legacy with a retrospect of previously performed repertoire and an ingenious panorama of chamber works based on the number five. The ensemble will also headline the opening concert of Festival Connect.
Festival Connect
Now in its fourth season, Festival Connect, the school’s flagship music festival under the direction of Wei He, shines a spotlight on one of the 20th century’s most revolutionary composers, Edgard Varèse, and his profound legacy. Varèse’s trailblazing work in electronic and experimental music has left an indelible imprint on countless composers. The festival will showcase some of his most iconic works, such as Ionisation, the groundbreaking piece for percussion ensemble, as well as highlight the unique musical voices of Chou Wen-Chung and others who have been inspired by Varèse's singular vision. This year’s festival takes an exciting turn, connecting Varèse’s musical influence to Debussy. The festival presents a vibrant array of performances, lectures, and interactive sessions celebrating the intertwined legacies of these visionary composers.
One School, Two Campuses
Visiting faculty from Juilliard in New York hold week-long residencies on the Tianjin campus, providing students with important learning opportunities and musical experience by performing side-by-side with them. Lydia Brown, Elaine Douvas, Hsin-Yun Huang, Laurie Smukler, and Carol Wincenc will give performances, master classes and workshops in Tianjin. Through project-based performance exchanges, Tianjin Juilliard faculty also share their music making on Juilliard’s New York stages, building creative connections across campuses. In October, conductor Ken Lam makes his Juilliard debut with the Juilliard Orchestra at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater, and in January, Tianjin Juilliard and Juilliard faculty will present a joint recital as part of the Daniel Saidenberg Faculty Recital Series at Paul Hall. This fall, Juilliard415—Juilliard Historical Performance’s period-instrument ensemble—will tour four cities in China with mezzo-soprano Xenia Puskarz Thomas. Juilliard415 will perform at the Tianjin Juilliard Concert Hall on October 13 and lead workshops with Tianjin Juilliard musicians.
