Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa looks to the future with confidence and announces a new program of operas, ballets and concerts from September to December 2021 with the theme of Excite, Expand, Educate”, dedicating to the 30th anniversary of the reopening of the theater (18.10.1991-18.10.2021).
From September 11th 2021 to January 5th 2022, there are in total 30 new musical events in the city of Genoa and throughout Italy, from Liguria, Piedmont up to Milan, including 3 new opera productions, a world premiere ballet and 14 choral and symphonic concerts.

Given that the cultural influence of opera is gradually declining, Teatro Carlo Felice realizes that it is necessary not only to consolidate the existing audience but also to attract more new ones to revitalize the traditional opera culture.

In terms of operas and ballets, the program will present a new staging of Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci produced by Teatro Carlo Felice in collaboration with Rai Cultura on October 8th. Christian Taraborrelli is the director and responsible for stage and lighting design. Andriy Yurkevych will serve as the musical director. Francesco Filidei’s Sull’essere angeli will be presented in double-bill for the first time. Virgilio Sieni is in charge of the direction, choreography, sets, costumes, and lighting. A new version of Vincenzo Bellini’s Bianca and Fernando with Hugo de Ana in charge of direction, sets, and costumes and Donato Renzetti responsible for the musical direction will debut on November 19th. It is worth mentioning that the first modern performance of Bianca and Fernando was presented on the opening day of Teatro Carlo Felice on April 7th 1828 with the libretto revised by Felice Romani for the occasion and the large musical passages composed by Vincenzo Bellini, which is finally brought to light again. On December 30th, the new production of Die lustige Witwe by Franz Lehár will make its debut with new Italian translation of libretto originally written by Victor Léon and Leo Stein and a new rhythm by Luca Micheletti. Asher Fisch will play the role of director, vocal interpreter, and musical conductor.

For symphonic concerts, Teatro Carlo Felice Orchestra gets inspiration from the symphonic repertoire and European concert opera arias, and integrates multiple music genres from Baroque to contemporary music. For example, symphonies will be performed in classical style, combining the styles of Mozart, Italian musicians before Mozart and Mozart’s contemporaries who influenced him. Another example is the performance of a series of works of composer Alessandro Stradella with the integration of Genoese and Ligurian cultures. The Orchestra played Alessandro Stradella’s Il Trespolo Tutore in Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista in 2020. In addition to contemporary music, Teatro Carlo Felice will also perform Italian symphonies from the 20th century. Guest conductors are Federico Maria Sardelli (September 16th), Andrea De Carlo (December 7th), Alessandro Cadario (October 30th), Marco Angius (October 14th), Dmitry Matvienko (September 11th) who is the winner of the Malko Competition 2021, and Sergey Krylov and Marcello Rota who will be in the finals of the Paganini Prize and the G.B. Viotti respectively. Pietro Borgonovo, Artistic Director of the Giovine Genovese Orchestra (GOG) will conduct the world premier of Adriano Guarnieri’s Tagli di luce (Cuts of Light) for orchestra which pays homage to Lucio Fontana. It is also the inaugural concert of the GOG Season. Pietro Borgonovo anticipates: “Guarnieri’s music is full of sonic charm. This composition in particular is inspired by the concept of ‘cuts’ in the art of Lucio Fontana, which in music occurs through abrupt interruption of sonority caused by brass. And this is exactly where the beauty of the piece lies: the cuts allow people to see something very intimate and precious: the lyricism, rendered by a few solo instruments, which—as in the concertino of a large Baroque concert—will be in dialogue with the orchestra.”

Four thematic choral concerts are scheduled, three of which are part of the Journey to Europe program performed by the Choir of Teatro Carlo Felice directed by Francesco Aliberti in the last two years, with the style ranging from the 14th century to the present day. There are pieces of music created by Domenico Zipoli, Carlos Guastavino and Ariel Ramirez in the Argentine repertoire on October 13th; Johann Sebastian Bach and Johannes Brahms from Germany on October 27th; and Franco-Flemish Jean Mouton and Francis Poulenc on December 3rd. Besides, during Christmas time on December 6th, the White Voices Chorus of the Teatro Carlo Felice directed by Gino Tanasini will perform publicly.
