Legendary Studio Ghibli composer Joe Hisaishi will make his Proms debut on Thursday this week, conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) in two large-scale works exploring themes of destruction and loss. The cinematic soundscapes of The End of the World which Hisasihi composed after visiting Ground Zero in New York will be set against the restless electric pulse and shimmer of Steve Reich’s The Desert Music – a scorched-earth vision of a post-nuclear wasteland. The concert will open with European premiere of the Symphonic Suite from Hisaishi’s The Boy and the Heron.
Joe Hisaishi is the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Composer-in-Association. Together they collaborated on the hugely successful Symphonic Celebration album that was released on the Deutsche Grammophon label, and have performed to sell-out audiences in Paris, London, Tokyo and Seoul. Future projects include new commissions for the RPO, studio recordings and further concerts in London and around the world.
Thursday’s BBC Proms performance follows hot on the heels of the RPO’s tour of Japan and Korea with Joe Hisaishi last month. The tour included three performances of a selection of Studio Ghibli sounds tracks in the Tokyo Dome to over 120,000 people as well as performances in Tokyo's Suntory Hall, featuring the Japan premieres of Hisaishi's harp concerto and the Symphonic Suite from The Boy and the Heron.
